In an organization there are high demands for their managers. They are expected to function well in both business aspects as personal aspects. The structure of organizations is getting less hierarchal, the size of the knowledge and processes that need to be managed is getting bigger and the speed in which decisions need to be made is getting higher.
Companies organize themselves around self-supporting teams so they can quickly react to the ever-changing environment. These teams are characterized by the diversity of its members, in age, background and specialty. This diversity can be very beneficial to the successes of the team when they are well leaded by its managers. However, this diversity demands a lot of the communication skills of the manager. For instance, it's very important for managers to let go of their own frame of reference, to handle resistance well and to make certain subjects discussable in a constructive way.
Each manager had its on style with both strengths and weaknesses. Many managers run into the following questions: How is it possible that I always fall into the same pattern when I get into that situation? What can I do to get rid of this automatic behaviour? How can I make a large impact? How can I increase my co-workers motivation?
There is no doubt that there are certain things that you as a manager can't let go of. It can be very useful to discuss these matters with other managers from the same or even a different area of expertise. By discussing and reflecting on these matters with others, you will gain new insights.
